MARKETING JOURNAL
some silly and some serious observations.

This morning I read the Hubspot 2020 "Not Another State of Marketing Report" and was shocked to learn that when content marketing about 35% of marketers found that Facebook yielded their highest ROI. Social Platforms such as Instagram (15%) and YouTube (5%) were not even close to this. This makes me wonder if Instagram ads and Youtube ads are more often looked over or if the generational gap between Facebook users and users of other forms of social media causes a shift in who responds to certain types of content marketing. I suppose it would depend on how authentic the marketed content came across and how they interacted with their audience through their respective platform.

Today my son and I went to Sonic for lunch. I noticed a sign that said, “Wacky Pack Meals $2.95 all day Thursday,” and thought to myself, “Holy heck…TODAY is Thursday!” And though I was already there, if I had heard about that deal before hand it would have reinforced the idea for me to go to sonic for a meal. I don’t see a lot of marketing for sonic, strangely. I feel they may be stuck in the old TV Ad world and not adapting to newer marketing vehicles. They should market those deals especially to young families.

Today on Facebook I heard from one of my “friends” (I use that term because it is the term used on Facebook) that you can get 12 months of Disney + Free if you switch to Verizon. Now I don’t like Verizon’s network or prices, but that mash up almost has me switching.

I am sitting here listening to a podcast called Ear Biscuits. It’s a show hosted by two people that I have watched since I was eleven or twelve years old. And a sponsored ad comes up in the middle of the show for Allbirds. And I find myself wanting a new pair of shoes not only because the company has a zero-waste mission, but because I hear that these two guys like this brand and I trust them for some reason. I think podcast ads may be the best way to market to people nowadays.

Since quarantine began, I have been obsessively using Door Dash. My bank account hates me, but I must hand it to the company they do have a gem of a product. I remember the first time I used an app like this was several years ago at a theatre festival in Dallas. We weren’t allowed to leave the hotel and we couldn’t drive anyway so I downloaded an app called favor and met a guy at his car in front of the hotel and got some Whataburger for my friend and me. The UI/UX of Door Dash really puts it over the top of other food delivery apps though. Along with its friendly copy, it is just an all-around joy of an experience.

I watch a lot of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney+ with my two-year-old. Whenever I log in the account, I notice a lot of Disney+ originals about the making of certain movies, about Disney’s animation process, etc. I wonder if this is a way to keep the Disney brand relevant during the interim of movie releases. I often wonder what led Disney to abandon the vault and make its way into streaming. I’m glad it did because I am definitely re-watching many Disney Channel original movies.

We are currently potty training our two-year-old and I told him that he could pick the potty that he wants to use. So, we went online (Thanks COVID) and looked up some. Immediately he picked sesame street. I wonder if there are collective features that make something more appealing to certain age groups. Why are popular things popular?

I am taking a Skill Share class about cutout animation and before each video the teacher states, “please go sign up for the full version of Skill Share using my link, it really helps.” The same thing happens with an illustrator I follow on Instagram who also teaches on Skill Share. I think it’s cool how Skill Share has found a way to motivate its teachers to advertise for them instead of shelling out millions to take over the ad world. In retrospect I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Skill share ad. I’ve heard one of podcasts and that is the only medium I have personally ever heard about it on other than through influencers.

I own a Canon camera. I have always owned a Canon camera. I don’t know why I’ve just always been more drawn to Canon. I think at some point someone I really admired owned a Canon and I wanted to be just like them. There must be a way to tap into that emotion and be able to establish a connection between someone and a product/service.

I’ve noticed on the amazon homepage that they only advertise things that are “amazon”. They advertise prime TV shoes, Alexa, amazon smart plugs, Amazon music, etc. I think it is a smart move to advertise your extras on your own site. It feels important to put your own brand first, even if you have hundreds of thousands more under your umbrella.

In my own marketing behavior, I’ve noticed that before I buy anything I look up on Google: “Best ________ 2020.” And I process to go through a bunch of listicles before deciding which to buy or if I buy the item at all. I think this is very typical of Millennials and Gen Z. The product is not enough at face value, I need to know everything about it. I need to hear from others why I should buy it.
